Self Build – Conservation Home In Wales

This ultra low carbon home in wales has been constructed to the highest standard using woodfibre insulation, external renders & airtightness tapes.  Due to the house being located in a conservation area in South Wales it had to meet strict criteria including zero carbon, zero waste, sustainable water use, and a healthy internal environment.

The insulation systems, along with breathable render and paints, were selected because of their sustainable, non-toxic credentials, high performance, and ability to deliver a healthy living environment.

Woodfibre insulation is excellent for conservation as it is a sustainable and renewable resource. Unlike other materials that are derived from non-renewable sources, such as plastic, our woodfibre is made from waste wood harvested from responsibly managed forests. At the end of its usable life it cam be re-used, recycled or composted.

In addition, the production of woodfibre insulation typically generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions and uses less energy than the production of plastic or other non-renewable materials. This makes it a more environmentally friendly option for those concerned about the impact of their choices on the planet.

The PAVATEX factory in Golbey is a shining example of the benefits of using eco materials to cut waster, lock carbon & save water.

Airtightness is a crucial aspect of building design and construction, there are several reasons why airtightness is important in construction:

  1. Energy Efficiency: Airtight buildings are more energy-efficient as they prevent heat loss or gain through the building envelope, reducing the amount of energy required to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

  2. Indoor Air Quality: Airtight buildings can help improve indoor air quality by reducing the amount of outdoor air that enters the building and by reducing the infiltration of pollutants and allergens.

  3. Moisture Control: Airtight buildings help prevent unwanted moisture buildup and associated mold growth, which can lead to health problems and building deterioration.

  4. Comfort: Airtight buildings are more comfortable as they help maintain a consistent indoor temperature and reduce drafts.

  5. Cost Savings: Airtight buildings can lead to significant cost savings by reducing energy consumption, improving indoor air quality, and reducing maintenance and repair costs associated with moisture-related issues.
