rustic Timber Frame Garden Office

‘This project involved the design and build of a compact yet highly efficient garden office, constructed with a timber frame and clad using breathable wood fibre insulation products. Intended as a quiet, comfortable workspace set just beyond the main home, the project showcases how traditional materials and modern sustainable practices can come together in a small-scale, functional structure.

Wood fibre boards were selected not only for their low environmental impact but also for their excellent thermal and acoustic performance, key considerations for a workspace used year-round.

Designed for ease of construction and long-term durability, this garden office demonstrates how natural building materials can be effectively applied in a practical, everyday setting. With a modest footprint and minimal site impact, it offers a replicable model for homeowners seeking an eco-conscious extension to their living or working space.

A key feature of this build is the use of Pavaflex flexible woodfibre insulation, fitted snugly between the joists of the suspended timber floor. This not only enhances thermal performance but also contributes to excellent acoustic control, vital for a productive workspace. Beneath the floor, a breathable yet waterproof membrane ensures long-term durability by protecting against ground moisture while allowing any trapped humidity to escape, maintaining the health of the building fabric.

Isolair has been used on the outside of the timber frame due to its multifunctionality, Isolair acts as a strong, breathable outer layer that improves comfort, simplifies construction, and supports a range of exterior finishes.

Isolair has a superior density compared to other insulations installed in the same location. This means that its thermal, acoustic and summertime overheating performance is exceptional.

Taken as a whole, this garden office reflects a careful blend of natural materials, traditional building methods and modern performance standards. The structure features a considered mix of timber, including Siberian Larch, UK-grown Douglas Fir and Thermowood Pine for the cladding, each chosen for durability, stability and aesthetic warmth. Every detail has been thoughtfully planned, from the breathable insulation build-up to the use of bamboo guttering, all contributing to reduced environmental impact and enhanced comfort. The result is a beautifully crafted and sustainable workspace that is both practical and inviting, making it an ideal place to work in peace and focus.

Together, these natural materials create a breathable, low-carbon envelope that supports year-round comfort with minimal energy demand. This garden office not only serves as a productive retreat but also showcases how bio-based materials can outperform conventional systems in small-scale architecture.
