Exeter College Porter’s Lodge, Oxford
Accessibility, Sustainability and Heritage Conservation in a Grade I Listed Building
Exeter College’s Porter’s Lodge is the main entrance to one of Oxford’s oldest colleges. Founded in 1314 and located on historic Turl Street, close to the famous Radcliffe Camera, the building sits at the heart of Oxford’s city centre.
A key aspect of the refurbishment was the use of breathable, natural building materials. Historic buildings were originally constructed using vapour-permeable materials that allow moisture to move naturally through the structure.
The completed works included a recessed platform lift, automated sliding entrance door, automated gate inspired by the original Turl Street timber gates, and a new intercom system with braille signage and an induction loop. These carefully designed improvements have made the college more accessible for students, staff and visitors.
Unity Lime Products were pleased to support the project by supplying breathable building materials and providing technical advice.
Historic buildings were originally constructed using natural, vapour-permeable materials that allow moisture to move freely through the building fabric. Using modern impermeable materials can trap moisture within walls, leading to issues such as dampness, decay and reduced thermal performance.
Our involvement helped ensure the specified systems were suitable for the historic structure, supporting both the conservation and sustainability goals of the project. By using natural, breathable materials that work in harmony with the existing building fabric, the refurbishment improves energy efficiency, helps regulate moisture levels and contributes to a healthier internal environment while protecting the long-term condition of the building.
